Delhi High Court Refuses to Postpone NEET UG 2022 Exam. Here is Why!!!

By: Avantika Bhardwaj on Jul 15, 2022

NEET 2022 Updates - The Delhi High Court has refused to postpone the national level medical entrance exam NEET 2022. The court has dismissed the plea seeking postponement of NEET UG 2022 saying “There is no merit in the petition”. Since the exam has already been scheduled to be conducted on 17 July, the court pointed out that it was too late to file the petition and it was misconceived too.

Justice Narula, who dismissed the petition said:

"I was quite inclined to pass an order against the petitioner but only because these are students we are not going to. If such petitions are filed then the court will not shy away from imposing costs,"

NEET 2022

The court was clearly not amused by the petitioners' wish to defer the exam date and request of rescheduling it after four to six weeks. No statements could convince the court as these were raised at the last minute. The court also raised an objection as to how 15 students could ask for the postponement of the exam at the last minute and do nothing when the exam is around the corner.

Why were the NEET Aspirants demanding NEET 2022 Postponement?

The demand to postpone NEET UG 2022 Exam became trending on the microblogging site ‘Twitter'. Students have been seen sharing #PostponeNEETUG2022 and asking the National Testing Agency (conducting body of NEET Exam) to postpone the exam and reschedule it for August 2022.

There are several reasons why students have been demanding the deferment of the exam. Below mentioned are some of the reasons:

  • There are students who hail from flood affected areas and find it difficult to reach their NEET Exam Center due to the poor condition in their area.
  • Many students say that the time between the NTA NEET Exam Date Announcement and the NEET UG Exam Date is too less.
  • They feel there is not enough time to prepare for the exam.
  • Many students have argued that JEE Main Aspirants had enough time to prepare as the exam was delayed and postponed for June and July while it was expected to be conducted in February and March.

Delhi High Court on Flood Situation:

There were only 15 students who pleaded for the postponement of the NEET Exam 2022. For the plea raised by students hailing from flood affected areas, the court pointed out that we are in the Monsoon season now.

The Justice said that the flood in some districts can and should not be the grounds on which an exam can be postponed and there are several things that keep happening in our country.

What does NTA have to say on this matter?

The National Testing Agency (NTA) which is conducting CUET, NEET and JEE Main Exam with not enough time between them. The reason why students have asked the court to offer some respite.

“Respondents scheduled National Level Examinations CUET, NEET UG and JEE in the month of July 2022 having a time gap of 1-2 days, wherein the syllabus of all three examinations is completely different,” the plea read.

NTA stood by its decision that the exam shall be conducted on its scheduled date. NTA also mentioned disruption in the academic calendar over the past two years due to the outbreak of COVID-19. The NTA also urged the court to not make any changes in NEET Exam Date as the delay of a single day would create discrepancies.

NTA also explained that the time schedule is required to be compressed this year in order to bring the original academic calendar back to its previous track.
