The National Institute of Technology Srinagar, which is commonly known as NIT, Jammu and Kashmir, is one of the Thirty-one NITs in India. The establishment of the institute took place in the academic year of 1960 as one of the eight Regional Engineering Colleges, later it was upgraded to the National Institute of Technology in the year of 2003. It has also been declared as the Institute of National importance by the Government of India.  Being one of the national institutes, it is directly under the control of Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD).

The institute has been granted the status of “Deemed University” and is also approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). It has also been given the approvals by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Government of India.

The infrastructure of the college has seen tremendous changes since the time it was built. The new infrastructure is at the final stage of completion. The campus is spread over an area of 67 acres, approximately. Something that makes the institute look beautiful is its surroundings. The institute is situated on the bank of beautiful Dal Lake. The campus of NIT Srinagar comprises of following elements;

 The campus has been, lately, enabled with Wi-Fi facilities, which makes information accessibility easier for the students. There are academic buildings, large enough and well-furnished classrooms, computer laboratories well connected with LAN. Each department consists of its own well equipped computer laboratories. There are lecture halls and high tech classrooms for the students, which helps in regular studies. The campus consists of one central library that comprises of all the relevant books with the latest editions. The books are well arranged and informative. The students have access to all the new and old books. The cafeteria serves healthy food at reasonable prices.

The faculty members of the institute are highly qualified. Most of the members hold PhD or M. Tech degree in their respective fields from IITs or NITs. The faculty members are the main attraction of NIT Srinagar. They tend to help their students to the maximum extent. Most of the members are experienced, thus making learning easier for the students. They help students to do better in the field they have chosen to pursue their career.

The NIT Srinagar Courses include Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs under several specializations. The institute also offers courses at the Doctorate level. The institute offers B. Tech at undergraduate level under eight different specializations, M. Tech and M. Sc at postgraduate level with three and one specialization respectively and PhD at the Doctorate level. The admissions to these programs depend on the minimum eligibility criteria defined by the institute.

The NIT Srinagar Admission Procedure for different programs varies from one another.

  • For admission to B. Tech, the candidates must pass senior secondary school with at least 75% marks in aggregate and must hold a valid score in JEE Main examination.
  • For M. Tech or M. Sc, the candidates are required to have a bachelor's degree in the relevant field and for PhD they must hold a master's degree in the relevant field. Candidates seeking admission must ensure that they fulfill the eligibility criteria defined by the institute.

The NIT Srinagar Placement and Training cell is quite active and has good collaborations with the national and multinational companies. Almost all the big companies visit the institute for recruiting the students.  The students are shortlisted based on their academic performances. The highest package has reached up to 72 LPA while the average remains to be at 4-5 LPA.

The annual technical festival of NIT Srinagar is “Techvaganza”. It is the national level technical festival conducted by the institute.
