The principle of electromagnetic induction forms the basis of the functioning of transformers. It mainly transfers electricity from one circuit to another without bringing a direct electrical connection in between. 

1. Components of Transformer - The major components of a transformer are windings (they are the two main coils of wire. There are two types of winding primary and secondary. Primary winding is connected to the source of input voltage whereas secondary winding is connected to the output load. 
2. Increase and decrease of voltage - The transformer increases the voltage when there are more turns in the secondary winding than the primary winding. Voltage is more in secondary winding than primary one. The transformer decreases the voltage when the secondary winding has fewer turns than the primary winding. Voltage is lesser in secondary winding than primary one.
