Perimeter of Cuboid Overview

When you look around your home, you will see several things that have the shape of a rectangular box. Furniture, books, and televisions, for example, are all rectangular boxes. This is a cuboid form. Ice, dice, and the Rubik's cube, on the other hand, are examples of another 3D form known as a cube. In actuality, a cube is a form of cuboid in which all sides are square and identical.

What is a Cuboid?

A cuboid is a three-dimensional solid that has six rectangular sides. Consider a cuboid to be a three-dimensional rectangle. It has three uneven dimensions: length, breadth, and height. A rectangle, on the other hand, is a two-dimensional object with a simple length and width. A translucent cuboid might resemble this.

Perimeter of Cuboid

Example of Perimeter of Cuboid

Tall buildings, books, crates, mobile phones, televisions, microwaves, photo frames, beds, bricks, and other cuboids may be found in our daily lives, which are examples of cuboids.

How do you recognize a Cuboid?

Each face of a cuboid is a rectangle, and the corners, or vertices, are 90-degree angles. Furthermore, the opposing faces are always equal. A book, for example, is a cuboid. It features six surfaces, each with the same proportions as its opposite pair.

Perimeter of Cuboid: Properties

The following are some of the characteristics of the perimeter of cuboid-

  1. A cuboid's faces are all rectangular and flat.
  2. A cuboid has two diagonals: a face diagonal and a space diagonal. A face diagonal is a diagonal that is drawn for a certain face. A space diagonal is formed by joining two opposed cuboid vertices.
  3. A cuboid is made up of six faces, twelve edges, and eight vertices.
  4. The angle formed by two dimensions, such as length and breadth or width and height, is always 90 degrees.
  5. The two opposing sides are perpendicular to each other.

Perimeter of Cuboid

The perimeter of a cuboid is the total length of all sides that cover the figure's border. It specifies the surface area of the cuboid's sides. We calculate the perimeter of a cuboid using the formula where all three cuboid parameters are independent. It is a geometrical figure's dimensional attribute. The perimeter of a cuboid is defined by its length, breadth, and height. Because the cuboid has 12 edges with varying values, the perimeter is given by-

Cuboid perimeter = 4 (l x b x h)

Where,

l is the length

b is the breadth

h is the height

Example: Find the perimeter of a cuboid whose length, width, and height are 7 cm, 2 cm, and 9 cm, respectively.

The length = 7 cm

The width = 2 cm

The height = 9 cm

Perimeter of cuboid = 4 (l x b x h)

                                = 4 (7 + 2 + 9)

                                = 4 x 18 cm

                                = 72 cm

How to Calculate the Perimeter of Cuboid?

The cuboid's perimeter may be measured along three axes. So we use the following steps to find the perimeter of cuboid-

Step 1: Obtain various cuboid dimensions such as length, width, and height. They are represented by the letters l, b, and h.

Step 2: Next, use the formula 4 (l+b+h) to get the needed perimeter of the supplied cuboid.

Derivation of Perimeter of Cuboid

A cuboid's perimeter is equal to the sum of the lengths of all its edges. Consider a cuboid with dimensions of length = l, breadth = b, and height = h. There are 12 edges, four of which are equal to l, four to w, and four to h. So, the perimeter of cuboid is = 4 ( l + b + h).

Perimeter of Cuboid with Square Base

A cuboid with a square base has the same length and width measurements. Height is simply a separate element. The bottom and upper faces of this sort of cube are square, thus the name. In real life, it appears to be a building. We apply the same formula to calculate the needed perimeter as we would for a regular cube.

What is the difference between a Cube and a Cuboid?

The following are some of the differences between a cube and a cuboid-

  1. A cube's diagonals are all equal, but only the diagonals of a cuboid's parallel sides are equal.
  2. The areas of all the faces of a cube are equal, whereas only the areas of the opposing faces of a cuboid are equal.
  3. The edges (sides) of a cube are all the same length, while the edges of a cuboid are not.
  4. The sides of the cube are all square, but the sides of the cuboid are all rectangular.

Cuboid Perimeter vs. Area vs. Volume

The difference between the perimeter of cuboid, the area of cuboid, and the volume of cuboid are given below-

Parameters

Area

Perimeter

Volume

Definition

It is the entire surface area covered by all six sides.

It is defined as the total of all twelve edges' lengths.

It is the space in which the cuboid lives.

Formula

4 (lb+bh+hl)

4 (l+b+h)

lbh

Dimension

It is a two-dimensional figure.

It has only one dimension.

It is a three-dimensional figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the length of the longest rod in a cuboid?

Ans. The longest rod is the longest diagonal that can be accommodated in a cuboid.

What other names may a cuboid have?

Ans. A cuboid is also known as a rectangle prism, a right prism, and a rectangular parallelepiped.

Are all the diagonals of a cuboid the same length?

Ans. No, only the diagonals that are opposing and parallel are equal.

What is the distinction between the cube’s perimeter and the cuboid formula?

Ans. The perimeter of a cube is equal to 12 sides, but the perimeter of a cuboid is equal to 4 (length + width + height). As a result, this is the fundamental difference between the perimeter of a cube and the cuboid formula.

How do you compute the perimeters of a cube and a cuboid?

Ans. A cuboid’s perimeter equals 4 (l + b + h).

Is a cube considered a cuboid?

Ans. A cube is a type of cuboid in which all of the cuboid faces are the same length.

Can a cube be called a cuboid?

Ans. Yes, since it is a form of a cuboid with equal-length faces.
