The 75% marks criteria in JEE Main 2025 refers to the minimum marks required by candidates in class 12 to be eligible for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). As per the recent official notification of JEE Main 2025 Exam, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has not removed the minimum 75% marks criterion for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main Exam. Candidates who qualify the JEE Main Exam will be able to get admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs (Centrally Funded Technical Institutes) should have secured at least 75% marks in 12th class board exam.

What is JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2025?

NTA rule clearly states:

“For the candidates who qualify for admission in the NITs, IIITs and such other CFTIs whose admissions are based on the JEE (Main) ranks in Paper 1, they should have secured at least 75% marks in the class 12 examination or be in the top 20 percentile in class 12 examination conducted by respective boards.”

The minimum qualifying marks in class 12 for SC and ST candidates is 65%. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) and all state educational boards share the top 20 percentile in 12th class board with the NTA after the result declaration.

  • Besides, as per the JEE Main Eligibility Criteria, the eligibility criteria for admission to B. Arch other than National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) will be confirmed by the Council of Architecture (CoA).
  • To be eligible for B. Planning, the candidates must have passed the class 12 qualifying examination securing at least 50% marks in aggregate.

The National Testing Agency has removed the minimum 75% qualifying marks criteria only for JEE Main 2025 Exam so as to compensate for the learning loss that occurred due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Afterwards, in the year 2023, the NTA restored the criterion in JEE Main and the same is expected to be followed in the upcoming exam as well.

75% Criterion in the IIT JEE Mains 2025

The JEE Main Exam also plays an eligibility criterion to appear in the JEE Advanced 2025 which is the only gateway exam for admission to the IITs. Candidates who pass class 12 board exams securing at least 75% marks in aggregate and qualify JEE Main with qualifying marks are considered eligible to take JEE Advanced 2025 (only first 2,50,000 candidates will be eligible to take the exam).

Other JEE Main Eligibility Criteria for JEE Main 2025 Exam

  • Candidates appearing in board exams 2025 or who have passed the board exams 2024 will be considered eligible for JEE Advanced only if they qualify JEE Main and fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria defined by the NTA.
  • Candidates who appeared in class 12 board exams 2024 and wish to improve their marks to meet the “75% minimum qualifying marks criterion”, they can appear in as many subjects as they want to improve their percentage.
  • Candidates belonging to SC, ST and PwD categories will be required to secure at least 65% marks in aggregate.
  • Marks obtained by candidates in 2024 or 2025, whichever is higher in the respective subjects will be considered for admission.
  • As per the JEE Main guidelines, there should be a single examination board that issues class 12 marksheet submitted by the canididates at the time of admission.
